Breaking news: Blue Bottle baristas are unionizing–again!
Workers at the upscale coffee chain’s World Trade Center location in New York City just announced their intent to join Blue Bottle Independent Union (BBIU). If workers win their union election, this location will become the tenth unionized Blue Bottle café in the country.
Blue Bottle Independent Union was founded in 2024 when workers successfully unionized all six Boston area cafés, followed by four California shops in 2025.
In response, Blue Bottle, which was owned by Nestlé until purchased by a private equity firm earlier this year, did not play fair: unlawful firings, retaliatory discipline, bargaining in bad faith, and more.
Blue Bottle’s union-busting shenanigans didn’t stop workers, though. Baristas fought back every time. Marches on the boss. Walkouts. A five-day strike during the holiday season.
And because baristas took collective action, Boston and California baristas won their first union contract this year, finally securing the pay, benefits and working conditions they deserve.
In short, this small, scrappy, worker-led union knows how to build worker power and get things done. Their union wave is now spreading to New York City, but they are still up against a Goliath.
