Federal Workers Are Fighting Back

Oct 2, 2025

Federal workers are fighting back against the Trump administration’s plans to fire huge numbers of federal workers during the government shut down. Here’s how you can help.

ICYMI: Trump’s Mass Firing Plans for Federal Workers

Prior to the government shutdown, the Trump administration’s Office of Management and Budget released a chilling memo: Federal agencies should prepare “mass firing plans” in advance of a potential shut down.

Specifically, the OMB memo directed agencies to prepare permanent reduction-in-force plans for programs where funding will lapse on October 1, no alternative funding is available, and said program is “not consistent with the President’s priorities.”

In the past, federal workers have returned to their jobs (with backpay) once the shutdown was over and funding restored.

The administration’s call for mass firing plans was not only unprecedented, it’s unlawful.

And it’s not only unlawful–it’s wrong. Federal employees are not political pawns. They are people–veterans, caregivers, and neighbors who have dedicated their lives to service.

Federal Workers Fight Back

The American Federation of Government Employees, along with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees just filed a lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s threats of a mass firing of federal employees in the event of a government shutdown.

But they need our support. For decades, AFGE was able to collect dues from members through paycheck deduction, just like most other unions. But in March, Donald Trump issued an executive order that barred agencies from cooperating in these standard dues deductions.

Because of Trump’s war on workers, AFGE has had to dip into their reserves just as they’re facing the biggest crisis in the union’s history.

Federal Worker Defense Fund

We’re fighting back alongside the federal workers who signed up to serve their country, but are being used as political pawns instead.

Stand with federal workers–donate to the Federal Workers Defense Fund to help fund the legal battle against the Trump administration’s plans to unlawfully fire thousands of federal workers.

In Solidarity,

The Labor Force
