Blue Bottle baristas are on strike! Blue Bottle baristas at five unionized cafes Boston just walked off the job in protest of the company’s decision to unilaterally install cameras.
Why Are Blue Bottle baristas on strike?
In 2024, Blue Bottle baristas unionized six Boston-area cafés, forming Blue Bottle Independent Union. A year later, the union is still fighting for a first contract, and they are up against a big foe: Nestlé, the infamous corporation that owns the Blue Bottle coffee chain.
Last week, the union filed unfair labor practice charges and marched on the boss in protest of Blue Bottle’s announcement that the company intended to bypass the negotiations process and unilaterally install surveillance cameras in unionized cafés.
Meanwhile, The Labor Force community sent over twenty-four thousand letters to Blue Bottle corporate higher-ups urging them to return to good faith negotiations with the union over surveillance cameras.

Last week, the union set a clear deadline for Blue Bottle: recommit to good faith negotiations by May 6 or the union will take further action.
Well, that deadline came and went without any movement from Blue Bottle, which is why right now Blue Bottle baristas are on strike for the pay, benefits, and safe working conditions they deserve.
In solidarity,
The Labor Force
