About The Labor Force
Our vision at The Labor Force is to bring the next generation of innovation to the labor movement and enable a significant increase in organizing nationwide, strengthening unions everywhere.
We believe that this vision requires rapid experimentation in a variety of workplace organizing settings to identify the most effective paths forward. Thus, we are not prescriptive about how to achieve this vision but instead focused on creating as many pathways as possible.
To do this, we partner with a variety of organizations–trade unions, indie unions, coalition campaigns, and community organizations–to develop and test new interventions and approaches in organizing and campaigning.
Our current work includes three distinct programs:
Our Advocacy Program program builds worker power by engaging the public on a wide array of labor movement campaigns. Through this program, we coordinate with labor groups to mobilize activists to take meaningful actions to complement what’s happening on the ground in those campaigns. Learn more and become a member of this program here.
Our DIY Labor program provides ongoing pro-bono capacity building support to worker-led and independent labor groups including Sports Solidarity, Trader Joe’s United, Blue Bottle Independent Union, and Carolina Amazonians United for Solidarity and Empowerment (C.A.U.S.E.).
We tailor support to the specific needs of these groups, which can range from 1:1 coaching and mentorship to skills-based trainings and finding and securing expert assistance on things like accounting, fundraising, communications, legal counsel, and more.
Our in-house network of specialists provides short-term support and expertise to labor campaigns across the U.S.. We’ve assembled some of the best and brightest labor technologists, data engineers, front-end developers, UX designers, peer-to-peer organizers, and more to collaboratively improve the speed, scale, and impact of labor campaigns. This team is also developing a password-protected resource library filled with key learnings, case studies, and tools that will be available to the movement.
At this time we are also incubating two new projects within the labor space.
WORX (Worker Organizing Research Exchange) is developing a cooperative data infrastructure to support and amplify the current surge in labor organizing efforts.
The Worker Autonomy Initiative, or WorkerAI, seeks to increase workers’ ability to navigate the world of regulatory labor protections with ease and empower them to take action independently.
