Across the country, working people are standing up to demand that rights be respected, safety be maintained, and wages be livable.
And in New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani answered the call by creating the Office of Worker Power to assist those in the private sector unionize by convening workers, holding public hearings, referring workers to unions and worker centers, and coordinating research across city agencies.
The new Office of Worker Power will also be cracking down on wage theft violations when working people are not paid what they’re owed. This is the most common form of crime in this country that steals over 50 billion dollars a year from working people.
Too often, workers have nowhere to turn when their boss doesn’t pay them what they are owed and violators are rarely brought to justice. In New York City, that’s about to change.
The new Office of Worker Power should be a model for states around the country to be serious about building an economy that works for all of us, not just the billionaires and multinational corporations.
In solidarity,
The Labor Force
