Nurses and clinicians at Mass General Brigham (MGB) just pulled off the largest nurses’ strike in Massachusetts history. But MGB still refuses to come to the table to negotiate a fair contract.
In July, after months of stalled negotiations, 4,000 Brigham and Women’s Hospital nurses and 465 MGB Home Care clinicians went on strike, the state’s largest nurses’ strike in history. Home Care clinicians went on strike for 7 days. When Brigham nurses tried to return to work after a one-day strike, MGB responded by locking nurses out of the hospital for four days. [1]
MGB nurses and clinicians aren’t asking for the moon–they are simply asking for fair pay and benefits, and reasonable caseloads that protect workers and patients alike, and limits on the use of temporary staff.
But MGB recently declared “practical impasse,” asserting that negotiations are stuck “unless nurses make significant changes to their proposal.” [2]
MGB is balking at nurses’ demands, yet just gave a 9% pay raise to its CEO, bringing their salary to a whopping $9.2 million. In FY 2024, the top 14 MGB executives made a combined $35.9 million.
“This is corporate greed in its clearest form,” said one nurse. “MGB found $9.2 million in a single year for its CEO, but when clinicians ask for competitive wages, safe patient caseloads and working conditions that allow us to safely provide complex care for patients in their homes, suddenly MGB claims it cannot meet our needs.” [3]
