Three brave Amazon workers are now facing retaliation for doing something fundamental to our democracy: speaking out and winning.
Fortunately, the workers have the law on their side.
What happened: Three members of Amazon Employees for Climate Justice (AECJ) testified before the Seattle City Council in June about the need for regulations on data centers and AI.
Then, they won!
Seattle City Council passed a one-year pause on data centers to allow time to discuss regulations, buying critical time for residents and organizers who don’t want to see their power bills go up and their quality of life go down. And it’s a good thing workers are calling for regulations. Amazon’s data centers led to record-high emissions for the company.
These workers were right. But Amazon is still striking back.
The day after the moratorium passed, those three brave workers were called into meetings with Amazon Employee Relations and informed they were under investigation for supposedly acting as a spokesperson for Amazon.
This is intimidation, plain and simple. Amazon wants to send a message to any worker who speaks up, be it about data centers, warehouse safety, inhumane delivery schedules for drivers, or climate justice – Toe Amazon’s company line, or else.
Thankfully, Seattle law protects employees from discrimination for sharing their political beliefs. AECJ filed a complaint with the Seattle Office for Civil Rights on behalf of the workers facing discipline and we’re going to have their back.
Amazon’s strategy is simple: intimidate workers into silence.
Our strategy is simple too: Fight back.
Amazon is trying to make an example out of them on behalf of all of corporate America, they shouldn’t have to fight this alone.
In solidarity,
The Labor Force
